It All Started With A Quilt

This is how the story begins.

First, you know how you have an idea in your mind of how you want a space to look?  You pin and pin room ideas because you like the walls in this one, or the bedding in that one.  Let’s just say, I have many pins of how I wanted our master bedroom to look.

Mr. Kell and I are not fancy, sophisticated people.  We are more your beer and barbecue kinda kids who like to sit outside in our lawn chairs on the drive way when the weather is warm.  We like to camp.  We are more small town than big city.  With that being said, I wanted our bedroom to be simple, with a manly twist.  I wanted white, and grays, with small pops of color.

Here were some of my ideas…

This one was my favorite.  It was bright, but simple.  The white bedding with the black and white pillows and green throw.  So perfect.  To this day, I love to decorate with black and white.  Oh, and the deer heads, that would be an ode to Mr. Kell who loves to hunt.

Subtle patterns in the pillows, and then BAM, the yellow.  A very happy space, but yet still simple and quiet.

Now the story gets good.  It was just supposed to be a quick trip to Homegoods, to look at the ceramics and to see if there were any grey quilts.  I bypassed the throw pillows because holy crap I would need a room just for pillows.

Anywhoo…

I was not looking for it, but it just jumped out and grabbed me from nowhere.  I could not ignore it.  I could not say no.

160It is a very bright coral. How could I say no.  The color is so fabulous.

Now to figure out what to do with the rest of the room.

It’s Time For Some Orange

I was walking around Target yesterday buying pink zebra sheets, and I came upon the most fabulous decorative items.

They all had one thing in common, the color orange.  I decided that orange was just what our living room was needing.

I found a few pieces while perusing the internet. Any of these pieces could add just the right amount of orange to make the room look “new”. With all the Christmas decorations down, our living room is looking a little dowdy. Plus, things like pillows, throw blankets, or a cute ceramic piece will not break the budget.

A Piece Of Orange

An Entryway Almost Complete

We have lived in our new home since June, and I am still not done with the entryway.  We rent, so  a part of me does not like to get too attached in case the home is not available again in a year.

When we first looked at this house, I immediately fell in love with the entryway.  Since I have been married, none of the homes we lived in had one.  You would open the front door, and immediately be in the living room.  This entryway was screaming for some bright and cheerful that screamed Necole!

I had an old dresser and an idea…

I painted the dresser a mint green that my mom used in her laundry room.  As you can see I need some drawer pulls.  The dresser also needs another coat of paint and and then needs to be sealed.

I have since finished my picture wall, and once this entryway is completed you will get to see!

This is not a great picture, but I do not have a wide angle lens.  When I get my iPhone 5, there will a panoramic view!

I have loved this dresser for so long, and I have finally found a perfect color for her.

Still to complete

  • Buy two thrifted chairs and paint them.
  • baskets for shoes
  • Hang pegs for keys, purse, etc
  • Have picture of girls printed on canvas
  • Add a set of old lockers
  • Make a runner rug for hallway

I just hope I can get this done soon to enjoy how awesome it is going to be!

My Mantle

Decorating the the new house is taking longer than I would prefer.  So, I am taking baby steps, and pinning.

This is my mantle in the living room.  I like the recessed wall and the arch.

Mr. Kell and I have come to an agreement that there should be an animal head hanging above the fireplace.  Not one that has been shot and stuffed, one more my style.

I am thinking something like this.

After that, I have no idea what I want to do.

I am so fickle when it comes to decorating.  I will start out with an idea, and change it fifty times before I finally buy something.  This is the number one reason why nothing ever gets done in my life.

Now, thanks to Pinterest, and looking through some blogs, I have a few ideas.

1.  Is there a right or wrong way?  How should I decorate my mantle so it is pleasing to the eye?

There is some really good info here.

2.  I am the kind of person who just likes to look at pictures and take a little bit from here an there.

I have this thing for candle sticks.  I love the different heights and textures.  I love the idea of mix matched candle holders of different heights lining the mantle.  Funky, yet clean and light.

3.  I love art.

Having a large piece of art as a focal point is a great idea.  It takes up most of the space, so all I would have to do is had a few odds and ends.  Not to mention it draws you eye up the wall making the seem higher.  Too bad the one piece of art I have is too large for the space.

3.  I love a funky mirror.

A large mirror and a few pieces make this mantle pop.  It is absolutely gorgeous along with the whole space.

There are so many options.

What are your ideas?

A Bathroom

A couple of days ago I showed you a picture of one of our bathrooms in the new house.  It will be the guest/girls bathroom.

It is a builder grade bathroom screaming for love.  Renting means I cannot paint cabinets or tile.  It does not mean that I cannot make it a stylish place for my three little girls to use.

I was brainstorming this morning, and these are a few ideas I have.

  1. No matter how many shower curtains I look at, I am always drawn to this one.  It is out of my (I am cheap) price range, but I think I will make an exception.
  2. The towel rack that is currently in the bathroom is loose.  I would love to replace it with something like this.
  3. I want all new bathroom accessories for my girls.  I like the texture and color of the one in the picture above, but will probably just go to Walmart and buy something like this, but in white.
  4. I am most excited about the artwork that I am going to put on the walls.  The one above is a picture I found here.  I want to make one that says “Flush The Toilet” and place it above the toilet.  Just a nice stylish reminder for my girls.
  5. I like the idea of using a striped towel as an added accessory.  The initial is brilliant.
  6. I have always thought that guest bathrooms should have white towels.
  7. More fun art for the walls with nice friendly reminders to my girls.
  8. See #7.

I am extremely fickle when it comes to decorating.  Tomorrow, I will probably have a completely different idea.

I Have A Few Ideas

So, as I have mentioned before, we are moving back home.  Home being where the husband and I grew up.

This house is like a blank canvas.  The walls are a perfect shade of cream framed in bright white molding.  It is the first time I have ever lived somewhere and did not want to paint.  Everything is light and open, and I love it.

I have so many ideas when it comes to decorating.  Being a renter, I am limited in what I can do, but I will work around it.

I thought I would start with the rooms that are visible, and my first choice is the dining room.  I am not a formal dining room kind of gal.  I am casual to the core, so I want the room to be simple, but colorful and funky, like me.

I have a table that has seen better days, but I am sticking with it.  Until I figure out just what I want to do with the table, I was thinking about covering it with a table cloth.

I love the floor length table cloth with the contrasting runner.  I love that this room looks more fun than formal.  I am finding it very difficult to find a floor length oval table cloth, so I guess I better perfect my sewing skills.  I am thinking of doing a color block with the table cloth, then find a great pattern for the runner.

Color, color, color….  What colors am I going to use?

I am leaning towards some of these.

Art work will consist of fabric on canvas, and prints.

I cannot wait for it all to come together.

Time to go and pack more boxes.

My Nook

If I ever had the chance to build a home, it would have a small sitting area off the main entrance. This would be the library/nook/sitting room. I have many ideas on how I would like it to look. It would also house the family computer, because I need a quiet place to blog and play on Pinterest.

Here is one example on how I would furnish and decorate the room.

Nook

If you cannot tell, I really do not like things that match.

What would you put in your nook?

Sweet Magazine Love

I love decorating magazines.  Before marriage and children, I would spends hours in a bookstore flipping thru magazine after magazine looking for my dream house style.   Back in those days when the money was all mine, I would also buy all those magazines.  I would then go home sit down and corner all my favorite pages.  After a few months had passed, and the magazine rack was over flowing, I would tear out those favorite pages and put them in a file.   After a flood in our closet last month I was forced to purge and throw away some of those pages.  It was funny to see the things I liked 10 years ago.

You know, it is interesting the things you come across going through boxes that have not been opened in awhile.  To my astonishment, I found months worth of my two favorite decorating/design magazines.

Cottage Living was my absolute favorite. It focused on cottage style. The magazine would show pictures of inside other peoples cottage style homes. Boy the dreaming I used to do.

I would look at these pages and start planning what my future home would look like. They had this great section in the first pages of the magazine that focused on an area of the house, like a sitting area. The next few pages would then give you ideas on how you could create this look.

Ok, not the best picture, but anywho.

Next came domino. This magazine fed the eclectic in me. My favorite part was the page of sticky tabs that came with each magazine. You did not have to corner any pages, you would use the sticky tabs. Absolute genius I tell you.

I have since organized all the old magazines and put them away yet again. Searching through the pages has given me some great ideas to start decorating my home.

I no longer spend money on decorating/design magazines. The extra dollars go to what I like to call “mama” magazines. It was fun to sit on the floor and rummage through all those pages. It reminded me that I still have much spring cleaning to do. Time to get to work.
