Christmas Itch

Ok, I am one of those people who, after Halloween was over, wished it went straight to Christmas.  It’s not that I don’t like Thanksgiving, it’s that I LOVE Christmas.  It is my favorite holiday.

The itch really started last Friday when I started listening to Christmas songs on Pandora.  I sat down with my journal, turned on Pinterest, and started making a list of all the crafts and decorations I wanted to make.

To make the itch worse, The Hallmark Channel was showing cheesy romantic Christmas movies.

I LOVE cheesy romantic Christmas movies.

I will post about my favorites very soon.

Thanksgiving being next week, I decided I would only complete one small project, then after Thanksgiving it would be on like Donkey Kong.

I wanted to try my hand at some simple letterpressesque wall art.

I got my inspiration from a few of these.

I started with a plain white canvas.

I got two for a little over $7.00 on sale recently from Hobby Lobby.  I used my 40% off coupon for yarn.

The Krylon Blue Ocean Breeze, is my go to color.  It is the perfect shade of turquoise for me. I plan to one day paint my dining room table this color.

Anywhoo, I painted the canvas blue ocean breeze, and decided that since it was for Christmas, that it should sparkle.  So, I then sprayed some gold glitter.

Now, I have read many blogs about how awesome this glitter spray is, and it is good, but the fumes are ridiculous.  I let it dry for 24 hours in a ventilated area, and the canvas still stinks.  I had to spray it with some coconut lime verbena mist just so I could handle it.

So Krylon, in my opinion, although the glitter is rockin, the fumes are not.

Viola!

Sparkles are pretty!

I then added some white vinyl letters I bought at Walmart for $2.48.

I used some words from my favorite Christmas song.

Isn’t it great?

It was so simple, and I bet many of you crafty peeps have many or all of the items already at your home.

It is going to sit on the mantle this year.

I have many awesome things planned for my mantle.

My design style for Christmas this year is simple, colorful, and playful.

My girls are going to love it!

I leave you with my other favorite Christmas song.

I flippin love that song!

Some Knitting Fun

I am in the process of finalizing what I will be knitting for Christmas gifts this year.  This time of year marks when I put my love for reading to the side, and let the crazy knitter surface.  I think I actually loose weight when I knit, because I do not have an extra hand to eat a snack.  Go figure.

I like to start with what yarn I want to use.  This usually depends on which craft store has the better coupons.  I switch from Michaels  to Hobby Lobby.  Each store has a pretty decent selection.  If there is a yarn that I am dying to have that is not in the store, I usually will order it from here.

I usually knit scarves because they are easy, and depending on the size of needles I use, I can knock it out in a day.  I have started baby blankets, but end up not liking how they are turning out.

This year I would like to try a beanie hat, blanket, some fingerless gloves, plus keep with my old stand by the scarf.

Here are some pictures to give you and idea.

They look so warm and snuggly, and make me wish for the days I do not have to use my air conditioning in my car.

I am ready for some cooler weather.  My crock pot is lookin to see some more action.

Happy knitting.

Little Big Room

I gave my daughter a big girl room for her birthday.  It was so much fun shopping and putting the room together for her.  I will never forget the look on her face when she walked into that room!

When we first moved here a little over a year ago, I just got her the basics.  She was not very good at keeping her things together (still isn’t), so I started simple and have built on it.

Here are some before pics.

As you can see it is pretty basic.  Jenna has added some of her own art along the way.

She requested that the room have pink, purple, and turquoise.  I let her pick out the bedspread, and I used that as the color palette for the room.  The new bedspread meant new curtains, which meant that my budget was blown.  Oh well, a girl only turns 8 once.  Right?

Here are the after pics.

The bedspread was from Target in their college section.  It is a duvet cover, so I used her previous bedspread as the duvet.  Not pictured is a cute white ruffled curtain panel that I also found at Target.  It is flanked by two hot pink panels that I bought at IKEA a year ago.  They were actually her little sisters curtains.  Since I am also giving her a new room for birthday, she was fine to give them up.  Whew!

I used pizza tins from the dollar tree for magnet boards, and square cork boards from Hobby Lobby for the message center.  She has been having so much fun pinning her art and fun things.  It is like having her own little pinterest boards.

The desk area was tidied up and as you can see, she has a television there instead of a computer.  Yep, her daddy went and got her a television.  That man is a sucka!!!!

All of the art I already owned.  The vintage Vogue posters have been sitting around here for 10 years, and the other fashion art I found in the dollar bins at Target.  I love Target.  The letter J’s are from Hobby Lobby and they were all 50% off.  I love Hobby Lobby.

Hopefully, this room will last her till she is at least 13.

P.S.  This is not an advertisement.  None of the stores mentioned know me from Adam.  They are places I always shop.

Busy, Busy, Busy List…

This is a long one!  I have so many things to accomplish in the next two days, I have re-written my list like 4-5 times.  It is not because I forgot anything, it was because I did not like the pen and paper.  Someone please medicate me!

  1. Tomorrow is my daughter’s birthday.
  2. I am redecorating her room for her present.
  3. I have to go to IKEA, Target, Hobby Lobby, Party City, Home Goods.
  4. I hope each store has what I need on my list.
  5. I am on a tight schedule.
  6. I do have a few back up plans.
  7. The room is going to be so awesome.
  8. I am not making any of it.
  9. I do not have the time or space.
  10. It is hard to be crafty in 150 degree weather.
  11. I let my daughter invite one person over for a sleepover for her birthday.
  12. This is her first sleepover, and I am only prepared for one other girl.  I already have three at home.
  13. The girls are getting mini manis.
  14. Then  pizza, decorating cupcakes, and a craft.
  15. After that, it is all up to the girls.
  16. I will be exhausted.
  17. It is going to be super fun!
  18. Did I mention I do not know how to use a drill?

Craft Time Instagram Style

The girls and I picked up my car Wednesday.  We were so excited to be able to get out of the house.  The night before, we sat down and designed a plan for the day.

First, we went to the park.  It was still early, and there was a nice cool breeze outside.

My daughter Abby had a surprise for me.  She knows how to swing all by herself.  I am very excited about this.

We then left the park to head to Hobby Lobby and do some damage.

Our craft project this week………… Library bags.

I usually carry a large bag that holds all the books we check out at the library.  It was beginning to get to heavy, so I thought that this would be a great idea.

The supplies included:

  • canvas bags
  • acrylic paint
  • letter stencils
  • sponges
  • decorative pins

Each girl picked out the colors of paint she wanted to use for her name.  I held the stencil in place while they used their sponges to stamp the paint in place.  The only person who got messy was me.  So overall, this was a craft success.

The bags came three in a pack for $6.99

I let my two older girls, pick out a pin to place on the bag.  I believe that you should accessorize everything.

Friday is library day, and I cannot wait to get my first book on my summer reading list.
