I went and got dirty

I did it, I finally did it.  I broke down and planted flowers.  Well, I didn’t just plant flowers, I decided to start cleaning out the flower beds.  What is wrong with me?  I blame the weather.  I blame Lowes for calling me in like a beacon with their bright yellow flowers.  I blame Yard Crashers.

Have I ever mentioned that I do not like getting dirty?  It really is funny considering I was a tomboy.  I decided to bust out of my shell of dislike for dirt and press on.

My girls and I went to Lowes yesterday to buy flowers and soil.  I had a spending budget of $20.00.  Living in Texas, I wanted flowers that did not require a lot of water, and could handle the Texas sun.

First, I had to clean out the area where I wanted the flowers.  This is what it looked like before we started.

This flower bed lines the front left side of our house. I pulled as many small roots, rocks, and weeds that my sore legs would allow (I was squatting the whole time). Then my daughter Abby and I worked up the dirt with a rake and added some gardening/potting soil.

Did I mention that I had two helpers?

This is Emily. She is 2 1/2.

This is Abby. She is 5.

Now for the flowers. I could not tell you the name of any of them, except for the sweet potato plant. I chose them by size and color, then the girls voted.

Abby and I planted the flowers, while Emily collected rocks and kept telling me she had to west.

Here is a pic of the finished product.

Abby was dying to use her new watering can she got at Ikea. I love this girl.

All of this was done before 10 am. I should get an award. Now I am on mission to dig up old bushes and clean out the flowering beds. We had such a good time.
